The Wellness Program
The OMIE Beacon Center offers wellness services for youth and their families who live,
work, or attend school in the Oceanview, Merced, Ingleside, and Excelsior
neighborhoods.
The Wellness Program aims to support youth to cope with the tough issues they face
growing up, as well as empower them to make healthy and meaningful life choices.
Our services include : Case Management, Substance Use Prevention, Wellness
Counseling, Trauma Therapy, Peer-Led Health Education, Empowerment and Life Skills
Groups, Gang Intervention and Juvenile Justice Prevention, Wellness Resource Library,
and Parent/Family Support Services.
All services are free and all youth are welcome.

Case Management
The service offers support to youth who may be struggling at home, in their
neighborhood, or in school. Youth meet one-on-one with a Beacon Case Manager who
serves as a mentor to assist them in developing and achieving goals. Case Managers
are specifically trained to work with youth who are involved, or at risk of being involved, in
gangs and the juvenile justice system. Full advocacy and accompaniment services are
provided.
Substance Use Prevention Counseling
This service is provided for youth who are experimenting or struggling with drugs or
alcohol. It is also intended for young people affected by someone in their life who may
be using. Youth meet individually with a trained substance use prevention counselor.
Wellness Counseling
The service matches youth with a trained counselor who can support them during
difficult times, assist them in managing stress and anger, and work with them to
develop healthy thinking and living habits. Our therapists are specifically trained to
work with youth around issues of trauma and violence.
Life Skills/Empowerment Groups
This service is offered as a way for youth to support each other through the stress of
growing up. In a safe and confidential space, Group Leaders offer education and lead
discussions on such topics as life skills, street wisdom, healthy relationships,
violence, trauma, peer pressure, self-esteem, and anger/stress management.
Health Education
The Beacon Center uses trained peer health educators to lead educational sessions
on the following topics: Physical health, HIV/STD prevention, alcohol, tobacco, drugs,
nutrition, communication, self-esteem, personal boundaries, body image, and puberty.
Community Education and Training
The Wellness Program offers education and professional development for
teachers, school administrative personnel, parents, and other social service
providers. We offer trainings on the following topics: child & adolescent
psychology (physiological & social development, effects of trauma and violence,
etc.), behavior management, healthy relationships/domestic violence, body
image/self-esteem/eating disorders, self-harm, suicide, gang intervention, and
navigating the juvenile justice system.
Wellness Library
The Beacon Wellness Program offers a Wellness Resources Library within James
Denman Middle School where youth and their families are encouraged to check out
books, videos, and worksheets on a wide variety of subjects, including alcohol and
drugs, sexual health, gang life, healthy relationships, nutrition, and media literacy.
Also included in the library are materials and referral resources to the larger network
of social services in the OMIE community.
Information and Referral Service
The Beacon Wellness Team maintains a close connection with all human service
agencies in the OMIE neighborhoods. If we are not able to meet your needs within
our program, we will directly link you to another community resource. In some cases
advocacy and accompaniment can be provided.
Parent/Family Support
In an effort to extend our support to the families and communities of the youth we
serve, The Wellness Program offers a parent/family component. Parents can seek
consultations with members of the Wellness Team, participate in workshops,
receive
assistance navigating the school system, be connected with community resources,
and
utilize case management advocacy services.
